Bishops tend to be found in the episcopalian church, Anglican church and Roman Catholic Church (and in some branches of the Methodist Church) and not the pentecostal church. A bishop is the third level of ordained clergy, deacons and priests being the other two. A bishop is the church leader of an area called a diocese which consists of many churches, parishes and clergy. A diocesan bishop has the sole right to sit at the cathedra - the bishop's throne for the diocese, the church iin which this is kept being called a cathedral. Usually cathedrals are large and lavish churches only found in larger cities. The bishop is responsible as spiritual head of the diocese and as such he has the authority to appoint clergy, ordain, confirm, administer, and so on. Although much delegation is done, in theory, nothing can really happen within the diocese without his ppermission. He is expected to take a leadership role in the Church nationally and sometimes internationally. because of their busy roles, larger dioceses have suffragen bishops - assistants who do not have a cathedral position. In addition, archdeacons - priests given a special administrative role - also aid the bishop in his duties across the diocese.
