The job of a cashier changes VASTLY from company to company.

The employee will also be required to monitor the shelf life of the product going through the till as they are the last line of defense if a product should not be sold. Hygiene of the till area worked on is normally that of the employee as is the accurate count of cash/transaction in their till.

In some other retailers the cashier may be responsible as above but have added lines to deal with such as ordering large home delivery items like furniture to be delivered to a customers home, selling insurances or other company services. Encouraging add-on sales i.e. you buy a torch the cashier prompts you to buy a pack of batteries as well, these are link sales.
Some companies offer store cards (a form of credit card for use in that store chain only) these are prompted for sale at the point of sale by the till operator. - another added responsibility as details o have to be gathered from the customer and passed to a financial body to issue the card.
Cashiers like all retail personnel has to be aware of health and safety. They need to be mind-full of potential accidents on the shop floor and make people aware of these. They will occasionally see theft occur (shop lifting) again they need to mad supervisory staff aware of this. And of course many retailers do not just have people sit on a till. They frequently have to fill shelving, clean within the store, handle customer issues and assist in stock acceptance and management of stock. The role certainly is not easy and can be very stressful at peak times such as Christmas where sales volumes can exceed 500% increase
