The legislative branch writes and passes the laws that affect the citizens, companies, and states of the US. They approve Presidential appointments, and confirm treaties with foreign governments. They can impeach and remove officers of the executive branch.

The legislative branch at the local level is most commonly the "city council" which is elected by the people within that local level of government such as a city, town or village. This type of governing body may go by some other name in different states and different municipalities. Other terms might be Board of Aldermen or Selectmen. Note that these are older terms made obvious by their political incorrectness since they imply that only men could be on that governing body.
