After completing undergraduate work, generally in a scientific discipline like Biology or Chemistry, aspiring anesthesiologists must earn a Doctor of Medicine degree, followed by at least four years of training in an anesthesiology residency program and internship. As part of their studies, medical students will study critical care medicine, cardiology, internal medicine, surgery and pharmacology. Like all physicians, anesthesiologists must be board certified prior to entering medical practice.

An undergraduate degree is required. A medical degree of 4 years is required after that.
