There are no effects I can think of that could be considered other than weight gain from eating too much of it to often as far as North American catfish are concerned. I can't speak for Asiatic or South American catfish. North American catfish is a large Freshwater Fish that has no poisons or toxins unless it picks up toxic chemicals or materials from the body of water it lives in. It is frequently enjoyed as part of social dinners and gatherings by many cultures in the southern United States where catfish is popular food. Catfish is either caught wild or farmed in man-made ponds. It has a mild flavor that tastes like a cross between baked or roasted chicken breast meat and boiled shrimp, and it takes on seasonings very well. Some chefs prefer to dip the fileted or steak-cut catfish in buttermilk and roll it in seasoned cornmeal before frying it, others prefer to pat a mix of hot spices directly onto the fish and pan-cook the fish on a high temperature, called "blackening". Both methods are typically served with pickled vegetables, lemon slices to squeeze over the fish, tartar sauces, some form of shredded cabbage salad, and iced tea.
