The affects of unemployment in a society are negative ones. With that said it must be pointed out that no society has a 100% employment rate of unemployment. In the real world, at any given point in time the normal rate of employment in most nations centers around 5%. Percentage points are important however, so the current 7% rate in the United States is not a healthy rate at all.

What is a significant negative of unemployment are among those people who cannot or will not seek employment due to societal situations or personal situations. These are are called the chronically unemployed.
The result of this type of unemployment may often lead to crime in order for these people to survive. Or, there are people who are always part of the welfare cycle.
This may include unwed mothers who have too many children to work. Sociologists are deeply concerned about this type of situation as quite often the children of mothers on welfare become welfare recipirnts in adult life based on the fact they grew up in a "welfare" family.
