What are the effects of abuse?

• There is either physical (sexual abuse or fondling of private parts of a child) or, verbal abuse (belittling the child; swearing such as calling them stupid and other disgusting names.) With physical abuse it is frightening for the child because they are often threatened by their abuser (generally a father or a male member of the family) and may become withdrawn and not do well if they are of school age. They may lose their appetite; bed wet or are afraid of the dark; vomiting and other physical symptoms. They fear telling the other parent or any relatives. A parent or parents that verbally abuse their child leave the child with no self confidence and they can become reclusive such as staying in their room too long; low grades in school; not hanging out with friends; lack of appetite and other physical symptoms. A child of either abuse feels alone and that they are the ones that did something wrong. If the abuse is not dealt with until the child reaches adulthood they do very poorly in society; can become depressed; feel guilty for not doing anything about it; may not make friends easily or may not feel comfortable with having a relationship with the opposite sex. The adult of abuse should seek psychological help.
