The normal greenhouse effect keeps the earth warm enough for life. It doesn't hurt us.

We now have an enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is causing global warming. This is damaging the planet as well as hurting us (thousands of people died in heat waves during 2012).

The sun sends light rays into the earth, but some of the light that hits the earth is reflected back into space. The rest warms the earth's surface and this warmth rises into the atmosphere in the form of infrared radiation. If carbon dioxide, along with water vapor, methane, sulfur hexafluoride, nitrous oxide, several types of chlorinated fluorocarbons and a few other gases, did not trap much of the rising heat, the earth would be so cold that no life could exist upon its surface. The trapping of this heat by gases is called the greenhouse effect.

Earth now has an enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is causing global warming. Global warming is causing climate change, which is having serious consequences for us all.

A:We are alive and warm due to the Greenhouse Effect. Without this we would be a cold lifeless planet.

However, the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect, caused by the increasing amounts of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels for transport and energy, is causing the atmosphere and the planet to warm up. This is changing our weather patterns. We are already seeing unusual weather records, hottest summers ever, driest seasons, biggest floods, coldest spells, no monsoon rains, the North West Passage free of ice etc.

  • Some gases are transparent to infra red rays from the Sun and others like Carbon dioxide and Methane act as blocks to the passage of these heat rays.
  • Plants and sea creatures have removed most of the CO2 in the air over millions of years and this keeps the Earth cool.
  • As sunlight enters the atmosphere it hits the ground and warms the Earth.
  • This changes the frequency of these rays from light to heat.
  • These lower frequency infra red rays then reflect back into the atmosphere but cannot escape into space because of the increased amounts of these greenhouse gases in the air due to burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil and gas.
  • Warmer weather results in stronger and more frequent hurricanes.
  • Drought and desertification increases as weather patterns become more unpredictable.
  • Coral reefs die as the water warms and warm water takes up more volume as it expands thus flooding coastal areas.
  • Forest fires increase due to drier conditions and this black soot lands on ice caps making them absorb more heat causing them to melt.
  • Glaciers on mountains shrink because snow fall is less and people relying on glacier melt water for their everyday needs find that these rivers have dried up.

The normal greenhouse effect keeps the earth warm enough for life. The enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is causing global warming comes from the extra carbon dioxide we are adding to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).

The greenhouse effect has a large effect on humans. This is because it decreases the oxygen in the atmosphere and kills organisms which humans use for food.

Greenhouse gases affect plants by affecting their growth cycle. Greenhouse gases contain high levels of carbon dioxide and methane, which limit nitrogen availability.

What do gases affect?

Greenhouse gases affect the temperature of the atmosphere. They capture the sun's heat and warm the planet.

Greenhouse gases- how do they affect us?

Greenhouse gases have been working with the heat from the sun to keep the earth comfortably warm for millions of years. The gases absorb some of the heat from the warmed earth and keep it from escaping into space. When greenhouse gas levels increase, as they are from recent human activity, they retain more heat and the earth warms up.
