As long as the child is not allergic, the effect should be a decrease in infection symptoms.
If allergic, the child will often develop a fine skin rash on belly, back, and arms, or hives. A severe reaction can also affect breathing which is a medical emergency. If your child has a reaction, call your doc and stop the medication. The Doc will order a different med.
