Best Answer

Many and varied, depending on the type of pollution.

Typical combustion products such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and nitrogen dioxide, can contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Other pollutants often created by imperfect combustion of fossil fuels, such as carbon monoxide and aromatic hydrocarbons, can cause respiratory problems in humans and other animals.

Products such as sulfur dioxide and some of the above pollutants can acidify the air and rainwater, causing erosion to stone architecture, corrosion on steel engineering structures and damage to some plantlife.

Many concentrated chemicals used in the process industry can cause harm if allowed into the open air, though plant safety is constantly being developed and improved upon.
