The disk defragmenter puts fragmented files back together in an orderly manner to speed up data access, leading to faster opening of files and programs. So defragging is an important drive maintenance task. You can defrag manually with the Windows defragger or just get an automatic defragmemter like Diskeeper09.

Bit of a long story but bear with me...

When you save a file to disk, Windows simply looks for the first piece of available space - without checking to see if the file will actually fit in the space it finds. The file is 'chopped up' and a piece the size of the available space is saved. Windows then looks for another piece of free space etc and repeats the process of saving until the whole file has been saved. This means the computer needs to keep track of each of the pieces, and can slow your computer down - especially if your disk is relatively full.

Defragmenting uses available free disk space to 'join' all the pieces of fragmented files back together again, and saves them in one single place - meaning the computer will be quicker in retrieving and saving the file.

This is the way a Windows computer works. Every time you save a picture, document, etc, the computer to save time a work faster will save the file in many pieces, but not all of them together. For example, the computer might just save one picture in locations 1,2,6,9,45,... in your hard drive. When the hard drive is not that big, and the information in it is not that much, your computer at the time of locating this pieces would not have any problems. The problem happens when the hard drive is full of files, the computers takes a long time to find each piece on the file you are requesting to open. This mean that your computer need to be defragmented. The process of defragmentation, is your computer regrouping all pieces of the files saved in consecutive locations. The file that the computer previously saved under locations 1,2,6,9,45,... are going to be pick up and place in locations 1,2,3,4,5,... This is with all files in the hard drive(s). My recommendations to avoid loosing performance in your computer and at the same time minimized the defragmentation time it would be to defragment your hard drive at least ones a month, depending on how often do you save, delete, install and uninstall programs.

Why cant you do a defragmenter on your computer?

You may not be a computer administrator, however sometimes you can still do one. Your computer may not need a defragment. Your computer does not have enough free space. Computers need about 15% of space to be free before you can defragment.
