Four of the eight beatitudes are from the hypothetical 'Q' document (6:20-23) and are found in both Matthew and Luke. The remaining four can be traced back to other sources known to Matthew, including the Psalms. The beatitudes as recorded in Matthew are:
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
2. They that mourn: for they will be comforted
3. The meek: for they shall inherit the earth
4. They which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
5. The merciful: for they shall obtain mercy
6. The pure in heart: for they shall see God
7. The peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God
8. they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The corresponding four beatitudes in Luke are different in meaning, although the words are almost the same:
1. Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
2. Those who are weeping, for they will laugh
3. The hungry, for they will be satisfied
4. Followers of the Son of Man, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

∙ 14y agoIn Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount, he describes what it takes to be happy.
"Happy are those" who: (1) are conscious of their spiritual need, (2) mourn, (3) are mild-tempered, (4) hunger and thirst for righteousness, (5) are merciful, (6) are pure in heart, (7) are peaceable, (8) are persecuted for righteousness' sake, and (9) are reproached and persecuted for his sake.-Matthew 5:3-11.
Some of these are obvious, others seem like they would NOT lead to happiness....like happy are those who MOURN, or who HUNGER AND THIRST for RIGHTEOUSNESS or are PERSECUTED , or REPROACHED...but these things lead to happiness when they turn people toward God for the answers..
So if a person is 'HUNGERING for righteousness', and looks around this earth and sees none, and turns to God and asks WHY? and searches for the answer in God's Word, The Bible, he WILL BE FILLED. Filling these needs can lead to real happiness and result in a wonderful future.

You will note in verse 5, that the meek (humble spirit) will inherit the Earth and not Heaven as it will come down to the New Earth (Revelation 21). Let Scripture teach and learn the truth.
