The two main elements present in a red ruby--aluminium and oxygen. This is actually the exact same main elements found in a sapphire, which has the same chemical composition but simply differs in colour which is caused by traces of a different elements (iron, titanium) which causes it to be blue versus a rubies red colour. The red colour of the ruby is due to traces of chromium in the aluminum oxide. Corundum (the aluminum oxide base of these gems) can be turned blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange, greenish or pink-orange by the impurities.
