Lift. A birds wings, especially trailing end of wing feathers provide lift for a bird to start flying. From there their wings are much like an airplane which brings us to the next factor.
Bernuli's law. Air takes longer to go over the top than it does to go under the bottom. This provides lift and a bird (not all) can glide.
Thermals. Air pressure greater than the bird's weight pushes under the birds wings and it can soar like a glider. This pressure is caused by heat or wind updrafts.
