How much space you really need. How much you want to pay. What type of connectors does it use (IDE, SATA, etc) What size is it: laptops usually use 2.5 in, desktops use 3.5 in The manufacturer. Do you really need a new hard drive, or is it more cost efficient to replace the whole computer?

Capacity - and speed. You should decide in advance, what you're mainly going to use your computer for. If you intend to use it primarily for high-quality gaming, you should consider a large hard-drive - as the extra capacity can be used by the computer as 'virtual memory' - which will make games run more smoothly. Additionally, the faster the drive can rotate means the computer can access data more quickly.
