Most Scholars would agree there are THREE (3) divisions in the Old Testament as follows: Torah (The Law); The Prophets; and The Writings.
This first view is traditionally based on the Hebrew Bible also known as the Tanakh. An alternate view traditionally based on the Orthodox Christian Old Testament divides the books in 4 major categories: Pentateuch (Law); Historical Books; Poetic Books; and Prophets. Basically the Writings division is further separated into history and poetic books.
The four classifications of the Old Testament are the Pentateuch (Torah), Historical Books, Poetic Books, and Prophetic Books. Each section contains different types of literature and narratives that contribute to the overall story of the Israelites.
The Old Testament may be classified into:
[1] Law, Pentateuch Or Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy
[2] History: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther
[3] Poetry: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon
[4] Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel
[5] Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi
The Jews divide it into the Torah (Law), Prophets, and Writings. Most Christian groups divide it into the Pentateuch, History,Wisdom, and Prophetic books.
I think they are:
1) Law - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
2) History - Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther
3) Poetry - Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Songs of Solomon
4) Major Prophets - Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations (written by Jeremiah), Ezekiel, Daniel
5) Minor Prophets - Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
In Christianity, the Old Testament is divided between the Law, the Histories, the Prophets, and the Psalms.
