This is a 2000 survey of different types of stalkers:

  • A 'rejected stalker' will stalk their victim to correct or avenge a rejection such as a breakup from boyfriend/girlfriend or spouses and include divorce or separation.
  • The 'resentful stalker' will stalk their victim with a vendetta in mind because they have an unfinished grievance against their victim and enjoy frightening or distressing the victim.
  • The 'intimacy seeker stalker' establishes a fantasy believing that their victim is their soul mate and they were 'meant' to be together.
  • The 'incompetent suitor .. stalker' generally are already in a relationship with someone else, but they have a fixation of entitlement should they be attracted to another person and feel they are entitled to their victim's love of the said stalker. This is often caused by poor social or courting skills.
  • The 'predatory stalker' will seek out a victim they are attracted too and spy on their every move and then the stalker will prepare for a plan of attack which is generally of a sexual nature. These types of stalkers are extremely dangerous.

Any type of individual that tries to have any contact with their victim (even if they had once been dating or married to them) and is driving by the resident of the victim; is walking perhaps a block away wherever the victim goes; is trying becoming a nuisance by appearing at the school, university or workplace are all still considered stalkers in their right although they may have never uttered a threat towards their victim. Stalking of any sort should be taken seriously and the victim should be sure their parents; good friend or even the police know who the stalker is.
