What is dressing?

Dressing used in wound care. This is all of the bandages and tape used to cover the exposed area of a wound. Specifically, the dressing is the material used to cover an open wound (gauze is most common dressing). The bandage is the tape used to hold the dressing in place.

A dressing is used primarily to keep infection out of the wound and secondarily to provide a surface for the platelets, (the glue in the blood that coagulates to control bleeding), that your body uses to hold on to.

The application of a dressing to a wound has two major functions:-

1. The structure of the dressing assists the platelets in the blood to coagulate.

2. Prevents infection.
