The liver is a vital organ present in vertebrates and some other animals. It has a wide range of functions: Detoxification, Protein synthesis, and production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. The general categories of liver functions are:

1. Synthesis

2. Storage

3. Protection

The major functions of a liver are -

  • bile production and excretion to help with the breakdown of fats in the digestive system
  • excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones and drugs
  • metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates
  • enzyme activation
  • storage of glucose in the form of glycogen
  • Storage of vitamins
  • Storage of minerals, including storing iron after the breakdown of old red blood cells
  • synthesis of plasma proteins such as albumin and clotting factors
  • blood detoxification and purification; the liver metabolizes these products, alters their chemical structure, makes them water soluble, and excretes them in bile.
  • production of antibodies

Liver

A dark reddish organ, the liver is the largest gland of the human body.In an adult human it weighs about 1.5 kg and is the size of a football.Liver lies beneth the diaphragm on the right side of the abdomen. It consist of a large right lobe and a smaller left lobe.A pear shaped greenish yellow sac,the gallbladder lies along the right lobe of liveron the ventral side.Liver secreates bile, which is stored in the gallblader. When the gallblader contracts the bile is releasedinto the duodenum through the common bile duct.Bile has bile salts which keep lipid droplets separate from one another,a process called emulsification. It helps lipid digesting enzymes to attack on lipids.

Beside these function liver carries a number of function which are summerized as follows

1) Removes amino groups from amino acid(de-amination).

2) Converts ammonia to less toxic form called the urea.

3) Manufactures most of the blood plasma proteins e.g prothrombin and albumin.

4) Forms red blood cells in feotus.

5) Destroys old red blood cells.

6) Manufactures blood clotting proteins called fibrinogen.

7) Synthesizes non-essential amino acid.

8) Converts glactose and fructode into glucose.

9) Converts glucose into glycogen and when required breakes glycogen into glucose.

10) Converts carbohydrates and protein into fats.

11) Carries out oxidation of fatty acid.

12) Forms lipoprotiens,cholesterol and phospholipids.

13) Synthesizes vitamin A from carotene and activates vitamin D.

14) Produces heat to mentain body temperature.

15) Produces anti-viral protein e.g interferon.

16) Stores fat-soluble vitamins(A,D,E and K) and minerals such as iron.
