Rugae are present in some organs of the human body, and enhance the functions of these organs:

gastric system:

gallbladder;

small intestine;

stomach;

hard palate;

scrotum;

skin, feet, hands, and fingers

urinary bladder;

vagina.

These ridges or folds, increase the elasticity, traction, and surface areas of the organ walls, enabling the organ to exist in minimal space, while retaining an enhanced capacity to extend, or expand, and contract, for functional purposes.
