The temporal lobe of the brain is responsible for object recognition, including face/person recognition. It also supports higher order cognition involving categories and abstract concepts. The medial temporal lobe houses the hippocampus and surrounding areas which are necessary for memory formation.

There are several functions of the temporal bone including covering the brain (including important structures; eg the middle meningeal artery), in addition to housing the hearing apparatus, providing muscle attachement sites and contributing to the TMJ (temporal madibular joint)
