The respiratory system co-operates with the circulatory system. The functions of the respiratory system is to gather oxygen by breathing via the nose or mouth. The oxygen then travels to the lungs where the capillaries in the lungs fill with fresh oxygen where it can then be distributed throughout the body.

Breathing

The chief functions of the respiratory system are to supply blood with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. The oxygen-rich blood circulates throughout the body. Oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in the cells of the body before the blood returns to the lungs. The diaphragm, a layer of muscle that lies across the bottom of the chest cavity, works with the lungs to pull fresh air into the lungs and to help push carbon dioxide out of the lungs. As the muscles of the diaphragm contract and relax, breathing takes place.
