The galaxies are vast collections of stars and gas. Our galaxy (the one we are in) is called the Milky Way. It contains some 200 to 400 billion stars, and is a barred spiral galaxy that stretches out one hundred thousand (100,000) light years. At the center the core is some 10,000 light years thick, but out by us its just 3000 light years wide. (This last line comes from "The Galaxy Song.")

There are roughly one hundred billion (100,000,000,000) galaxies in our universe.
