There are two basic riding styles that most people use: Western and English. In those two styles, there are four basic movements of their horses.

1 beat movement: Walk/Walk

2 beat movement: Jog/Trot

3 beat movement: Lope/Canter

4 beat movement: Gallop/Gallop

Those are the most basic, but among certain breeds, there are other movements that are expected. There's the Rack of the Tennessee Racking horses, the various "pacing" movements of the Paso Finos, and some draft horses can perform what is called a "Tolt".
