Song writers are as a rule freelance, with very unpredictable incomes and production targets. They are likely to work as many, or as few hours as they need. On top of that the line between work and hobby tends to get fairly blurred for people who work with music.

There can also be different contracts. Songs can either be sold straight off, or there can be a clause giving the writer a percentage of money earned by the song in sales and radio time and such.

A song writer who manages to get one huge hit may not have to work for years.

OTOH he will most probably want to work right then, as other artists are likely to want him to write for them too, when the going is good.
