Roman Catholic AnswerThe purpose is to try and make the Gospel understandable to someone who lives in a different culture. It would be analogous to speaking the language. You can not preach the Gospel in English - or Hebrew - or Latin to someone who lives in Japan, they wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about. You first must learn Japanese to be able to preach the Gospel. In the same way, to make them understand the Gospel message you have to be able to apply it in a way which makes sense to that culture. It is important because otherwise you are not going to be able to be understood and you will not be able to get Jesus' message across.
