What are the important features found in the Gospel of Mark?

The Gospel of Mark was the first New Testament gospel to be written and, like all the other gospels, was written in Greek. It is written a a rough, ungrammatical style, as if by a person of limited literary skills, but on analysis shows astonishing literary and rhetorical skills. Its author is unknown, despite later attribution to Mark, but he has been described as possible the most skilled author of his age. One of the most peculiarly distinctive Markan compositional devices has been called an intercalation or sandwich, occurring more often and with greater sophistication than in any other known writing from antiquity. Mark is also a prime example in the use of chiastic and parallel structures to create emphasis or develop themes not otherwise apparent.

The entire gospel (excluding verses 16:9-20, which are not original to the gospel) is framed by a parallel structure, in which each event in an opening set is mirrored by an event in the second set:

A . John explains the coming of Jesus (Mark 1:1-8)
