That Oedipus may be the very killer that he seeks and that just as he saves Thebes so may he destroy it are the ironies in the first part of "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).
Specifically, the priest of Zeus suggests that the city that Theban King Oedipus saves from the monstrous Sphinx may be brought down by the current pestilence. The gods through the Apolline oracle say that the pestilence will end with the identification and execution or exile of the guilty in the killing of Oedipus' royal predecessor, Laius. By the end of the first part of the play, it is looking most ironically like Oedipus is the killer, because Teiresias the blind prophet, Thebes' wisest man and leading royal advisor, says so.
Oedipus Rex is part of a four part collection of plays, three tradgedies and a comedy. We do not have the Comedy but the three tradgedies are "Oedipus Rex", "Oedipus at Colonus", and "Antigone".
"Rex" is Latin for "King". Oedipus Rex means "Oedipus the King".
First of all, there is no external conflict in Oedipus Rex, but the internal conflict is with Oedipus' discovery of his true identity and how he reacts to it.
oedipus is Laiu's murderer
oedipus learns his identity from the shepard
Thebes is the setting of Oedipus Rex because it is the place where the story begins.
Oedipus is Laius's murderer.
'King' is an English equivalent of 'Rex' in the play 'Oedipus Rex'.
the Chorus leader
Apollo the sun god is the Delian Healer. Such is his description by the chorus. The reference is in the very first ode of 'Oedipus Rex'.
Suicide is what happens to Oedipus' queen in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Jocasta is Theban King Oedipus' queen. In the last part of the play, she correctly deduces that Oedipus is her son, the killer of her first husband, King Laius, and the half-brother of his children with her. The knowledge causes her to hang herself with the threads from her own robes.
Theban Queen Jocasta is Theban King Creon's wife in 'Oedipus Rex'. She's the mother of his four children. She also is Oedipus' mother, through her first marriage to Theban King Laius.
