Water can seep through the mass of waste in a landfill. As it does so, various pollutants can dissolve in the water, and the water can be contaminated by bacteria growing in the fill. If inadequate measures were taken in constructing the landfill, this water can easily enter local aquifers, polluting local water supplies.

In other words, pollution.
