Amulets
Amulets (charms) were placed between layers of a mummy's wrappings because it was believed that they would protect the mummy from evil. One of the most popular figures used for these amulets was known as the scarab, which was a stylized depiction of a dung beetle. In the nineteenth century, wealthy British people who had visited Egypt would sometimes have mummies shipped back to Britain and then invite their friends over for "mummy unwrapping" parties at which they would drink expensive liquor and watch as mummies were unwrapped.
