Far more raccoons die of being struck by a motor vehicle or by being shot by hunters than die of natural causes such as disease and predation. Now and then there is an outbreak in certain areas of a disease, such as distemper, that may kill off a large part of the raccoon population.
Diseases, including rabies and distemper, are a great cause of death in raccoons. In areas with heavy vehicular traffic and extensive hunting, these two factors can account for up to 90% of all deaths of adult raccoons. Predation is of only minor concern as most large predators have been killed off by humans. Overall, few wild raccoons will live more than 2-3 years while captive raccoons may live 15 years or more.
