There are various differences between the book and the film. The main difference being of the perspective. In the book although it is written in 3rd person, the book is seen entirely through Bruno's eyes. This means everything that we know is interpreted through Bruno. In the film we see for ourselves what is happening and don't need to interpret Bruno's view.
Another major difference is the character of Bruno's mother. In the book she is quite subjective and we hear of moments in which she wants to move back to Berlin. In the film she is far more emotional and sympathetic in terms of what is happening to the Jews, allowing the audience to have a character which reflects their own disgust at the situation.
Bruno's father is seen more as a family figure in the film whereas the book portrays him to be a stern man whose live revolves around his job.
In terms of plot the ending differs in the film. Without giving too much away, the book has an epilogue which explains how Bruno's family comes to terms with Bruno whereas the film has a dramatic climax in which the family are involved with.
There are also subtle differences such as the boys ages- in the book they are 9 and in the film they are 8. There appears to be no reason for this.
There is a also a chapter in the book in which Hitler visits the house however this is not included in the film version.
