The river tees is a complex river. its landforms should be divided into three regions. The upper course contains steep v shaped valleys, interlocking spurs, waterfalls such as High Force falls and gorges. The middle course has meanders such as those around the town of Yarm. However during the 19th Century these meanders have been straightened, a term called channelisation, to aid shipping. The lower course of the river is flat and open valley. This region is heavily industrialised.

Rivers shape the land in many ways but for a river like the Tees the main effect is that on every bend the flowing water erodes the outside of the bend and deposits silt on the inside of the bend. This produces the classical snake like path and sometimes when the erosion manages to join two nearby bends you get what is called an ox-bow lake and the river jumps back into a straighter line again. An oxbow lake is a U-shaped body of water formed when a wide meander from the main stem of a river is cut off to create a lake. This landform is called an oxbow lake for the distinctive curved shape. The word "oxbow" can also refer to a U-shaped bend in a river or stream, whether or not it is cut off from the main stream. An oxbow lake is formed when a river creates a meander, due to the river's eroding the bank through hydraulic action, abrasion and corrosion. After a long period of time, the meander becomes very curved, and eventually the neck of the meander will become narrower and the river will cut through the neck at a time of flood, cutting off the meander and forming an oxbow lake.

I'm not sure if this answers your question well enough but if you want more info type in River Tees into whatever search engine you use or go to the following link: http://www.upperteesdale.co.uk/main.html
