The People I Know That Have Taken Depakote Experenced Significant Weight Gain. This Is Not Shown In The Indications Of This Drug. But It Is My Opinion That This Happens. I`m Not Sure If There Is A Medication To Treat Bipolar Ect. That Does Not Cause Weight Gain Also. Hope This Helps

I take 1000mg of depakote everyday for epilepsy. Very common side effects include:
The most troubling is tardive dyskinesia. This is uncontrollable movements and shaking, similar to Parkinsons disease.
Increase in Appetite (ie: Hungry very often, feeling hungry again after eating a meal)
Weight Gain
Tired and Drowsy (ie: Easily falling asleep and having trouble getting out of bed)
Dizziness
Trouble with Balance (ie: Can't stay still on 1 foot, feels like you're rocking back and forth while standing still)
Digestive Problems (ie: Diarrhea, loose stool, very soft stool, gas)
Slows the brain down (ei: Need time to think, can't work as fast as others, don't like to be rushed)

∙ 10y agoI was on a low dose, I decreased the amount under the care of my doctor. At this point I am going from crying my eyes out to wanting to choke something. I have a ripping headache and I am nervous. I was given this medicine for a bruise on my brain due to a blow taken on the right side of my head, causing vertigo and other problems.

Depakote is not known for causing that reaction, it's more common with antipsychotic medications such as Haldol.
