Animism is belief in the spiritual forces that inhabit every landmark, and even trees and other familiar objects. One of the most important of the early European animist beliefs was Mother Earth, known sometimes as Gaia. The sun, moon and stars were also worshipped.
Animism preceded what we now call paganism, but the dividing line is not clear-cut. Perhaps the difference is when the spirit that dwelt in an object became regarded as a god associated with the object, but not confined to it. Or when the god became regarded as human-like.
