A cylinder is used to create the Mercator Projection. The Earth's surface is projected onto the cylinder, which is then unrolled to create a flat map. This projection results in distortions in the polar regions.
Geardus Mercator invented the Mercator Map in 1569
There always distortions on a map because a map is flat and a globe is round.

Mercator is not a map, but a map projection, i.e. a way of representing the continents on a map. The Mercator projection is only accurate between 30 degrees north and south latitude. The further away you go from that point, the greater the exaggeration.
On a Mercator map it is a straight line.

The Robinson projection shows the whole world except the extreme polar regions on one map by balancing both size and shape distortions across the globe.
