There are many organs in the digestive system here is a list of each and what each does. The digestive system starts at the mouth. The mouth chews up the food, mixes it with saliva and breaks down carbohydrates, the food then gets pushed back and swallowed down the esophagus. Which is the next step, the esophagus and the stomach. When swallowed the food takes up to 8 seconds to travel to the stomach. Once the food is in the stomach it is then mixed around with exzymes and acids until it turns liquid and it is known as chyme. It then goes to the small intestine, which is 24 feet long. Its seperated into three parts that do the most of the digestion and absorption. This is where the molecules of the food go into the blood and cells. Then is the Large intestine only 5 feet long, includes the cecum, colon, and rectum. This is where the last bits of nutrients absorption happens also where the wastes is transformed into feces. The pancreas is also another organ of the digestive system it assists the lower intestine it also helps process the sugar in your blood. The liver is a very important organ of the digestive system and has many fuctions such as regulate blood sugar levels, helps you have energy by storing glycogen, and makes vitamin A, it can also be the cause of blood clots. The gallbladder is the last one it is a storage for bile, which is used to digest fat. Those are the major organs of the digestive system and their functions.

You can't live without at least some of your stomach and small intestine. You can live without the large intestine but would require a colostomy and the colostomy bag for the rest of your life.
The stomach is the source of gastric juice, and this is composed of mucus which lubricates and protects the lining from digesting itself.
The juice also has a digestive enzyme called pepsin which breaks proteins into peptides. The juice contains hydrochloric acid (HCl) that denatures proteins and kills microbes in food and lastly there is
intrinsic factor which helps to absorb of Vitamin B12.
All of this then moves into the small intestine which has the function to absorb 90% of the nutrients that you would take in.
