Merits: because laws are enforced, we are less likely to become the victims of crime. Faults: sometimes the crimminal justice system makes mistakes and punishes the innocent while failing to convict the guilty (I'm looking at you, O.J. Simpson) and even when the system get everything right, it is still extremely expensive.

The Criminal Justice System is based upon punishment.

Though it tries to change an individual's attitude through various kinds of programs within correctional institutions, it does not always succeed. Many people do not react well to punishment. They sometimes return to the community with the same problems they left with. They do not have an adequate chance to heal.

There are other weaknesses with this system. People do not always understand what is happening in court because of language problems-even with the help of interpreters. It takes a long time to hold court cases, especially in smaller, more remote communities. It separates people from their families for long periods of time.
