A fact is that the foreskin is an important part of the penis and that it protects the glans and the rest of the penis as well as improve sexual performance and sensation. It is also a major erogenous zone in its own right. A myth is that a god said that it should be removed at the behest of a God as is the case in Jewish circumcision. There are many other reasons this is done though. The Muslims for example do it to emulate Mohammad who it was said by a particular scholar was born with a penis that was deformed (had no foreskin) penises are also mutilated as a right of passage into manhood. In Victorian times the reason was that circumcision would stop boys from masturbating and that this was a good idea because masturbation caused disease. since then the reasoning has changed and the practice has reduced but people are still falling for the misinformation being put forward such as a circumcised penis is more hygienic and less likely to pick up diseases.
