There were many explorers before the 17th century.
The most famous of these is probably Christopher Columbus, who set sail in 1492. There were also many of the Spanish Conquistadors who explored before that time, namely Hernan Cortes, Francisco Pizarro and Hernando de Soto. Other explorers who sailed to the Americas were John Cabot, Walter Raleigh (although his travels were closer to 1600), Francis Drake.
Other explorers went in other directions than to the Americas. Marco Polo, who travelled to the Orient, is probably the most famous of these. Ferdinand Magellan, a Portugese explorer, was the first person to circumnavigate the globe (he died partway through his voyage, but one of his ships successfully completed the circumnavigation). Prince Henry (the Navigator) of Portugal explored the North African coast.
