One set of such organisms is bacteria of the genus Deinococcus. Deinococcus radiodurans is resistant to cold, UV radiation, acids, dehydration, vacuums, and gamma rays. A cell of this species will live after being exposed to 500 times as much radiation as a human cell can take. Through genetic engineering, it can concentrate uranium compounds in solution into insoluble masses. Other uses for this organism include bioremediation of heavy metals such as Mercury. Deinococcus geothermalis bacteria are being investigated for similar use.

Various fungi concentrate some elements and are sufficiently resistant to radiation that they are potentially useful for cleaning up cesium-137.
