"Nitro" is the opposite of "Retro" in Mario Kart. The term nitro refers to any cup consisting of courses new to the Mario Kart series (courses not returning from an earlier Mario Kart game).

There are 8 cups total, 4 containing retro courses (N64, Mario Kart for the Gameboy Advanced, etc.) and 4 containing new courses. None of the courses is named the "Wii cup."

The Nitro grand prix is the new courses in Mario Kart DS. To get new courses, you have to unlock cups (2 in the nitro and two in the retro) by getting gold trophies in the starting cups. After you have unlocked all the cups in 150cc and gotten gold trophies in them, you can unlock Mirror (known as 'extra mode' in Mario Kart 64), which is flipped courses in 150cc mode.
No new Mario kart has been announced for the DS
The new items for Mario kart 7 are Fire Flower, Super Leaf and Lucky Seven.The Fire Flower allows you to throw fireballs. The Super Leaf makes your vehicle grow a tail, which you can attack with. The Lucky Seven equips you seven items simultaneously.
