The basic music box has a clockwork mechanism that rotates a metal cylinder; the surface of the cylinder has bumps on it. As it turns these bumps pluck the "teeth" of something similar to a metal comb; each "tooth" produces a different tone. Some Music Boxes use a disk instead of a cylinder, and in either case, it's possible to design the box so that the disk or cylinder can be easily replaced with a different one to play a different tune.
