Acoustic stethoscopes are familiar to most people, and operate on the transmission of sound from the chest piece, via air-filled hollow tubes, to the listener's ears. The chestpiece usually consists of two sides that can be placed against the patient for sensing sound - a diaphragm (plastic disc) or bell (hollow cup). If the diaphragm is placed on the patient, body sounds vibrate the diaphragm, creating acoustic pressure waves which travel up the tubing to the listener's ears. If the bell is placed on the patient, the vibrations of the skin directly produce acoustic pressure waves traveling up to the listener's ears.

The stethoscope is a medical device for listening to internal sounds in the human body. There are two types of stethoscopes in use, acoustic and electronic.

Commonly available Acoustic stethoscopes operate on the transmission of sound from the chest-piece, via air-filled hollow tubes, to the listener's ears. The chest-piece usually consists of two sides that can be placed against the patient for sensing sound - a diaphragm (plastic disc) or bell (hollow cup). The bell transmits low frequency sounds, while the diaphragm transmits higher frequency sounds. The problem with acoustic stethoscope is that the sound level is extremely low, making diagnosis difficult.

Electronic stethoscopes overcome the low sound levels by amplifying body sounds. Currently, a number of companies offer electronic stethoscopes, and it can be expected that within a few years, the electronic stethoscope will have eclipsed acoustic devices.

The doctor may ask you to remove you clothes to listen to your heart with a stethoscope. When you breathe the stetoscope is a way for the doctor to hear your heartbeat and make sure your heart is pumping blood. CHILDREN: If the doctor asks you to remove your clothes to listen to your heart, do not say no and carry on. It is for your own health. When i was a kid, I hated taking my clothes off for the doctor to listen to my heart. My daughter hates it too. It will be over in a second, just cooperate and you wont get put in time-out in the waiting room. :)

There are two types of commonly used stethoscopes, electronic and acoustic. Acoustic stethoscopes consist of a chest piece, two hollow air filled tubes and the ear pieces. There are normally two sides to the chest piece: the diaphragm, a plastic disk, and the bell, a hollow cup. When the diaphragm is placed against the patient, the sounds of the body vibrate the plastic disk and acoustic pressure waves are formed. These pressure waves travel up the hollow tubes to the listener's ears. The diaphragm side of the chest piece is useful for transmitting high frequency sounds. If the bell is placed against the patient, the vibrations of the skin directly produce acoustic pressure waves that travel up the hollow tubes to the listener's ears. The bell side of the chest piece is used to tramsmit low frquency sounds. Electronic stethoscopes function by amplifying body sounds and are somewhat more useful for diagnosing problems with a patient because of the increased volume of the sounds.

Why does a stethoscope feel cold?

The reason why stethoscopes feel cold is because the chestpiece is made of steel and steel gets very cold. Sprague stethoscopes are one the coldest stethoscopes. I just went to the doctor and she had a sprague stethoscope and when she saw the look on my face when she touched it to my chest, she laughed and said i know, it's really cold.

Why are stethoscopes necessary?

Stethoscopes magnify (and isolate) the sounds in the internal organs, notably the heartbeat and the motion of air through the lungs. They began as copies of the "ear trumpets" used as primitive hearing aids.
