In an alternator, there are two main parts, one is stationary part and other is rotating part. Field winding may be placed on fixed part(stator) as in case of DC generator and on rotating part(rotor) as in case of AC genarators. Armature winding may be placed on rotating part(rotor) in case of DC generator and on stationary part (stator) in case of AC generator. In AC generators, for all practical purposes you have rotating filed system.
The four main parts of a car's alternator are the regulator, rotor, stator, and diode bridge.
If the alternator is bolted on too tight on its bracket, then it will cause the alternator to have a "bend" so that the clearance between the moving parts is reduced and the moving parts eventually jammed.
Contact your local auto parts store, they will have or can get you the parts needed.
Alternator
An alternator for a Rover 214 can be ordered from the dealer or from a local auto parts store. In addition, an alternator can be found at a junk yard.
Any auto parts store where you will go to buy a new alternator can tell you what you need.
Ask your local auto parts store to do it.
Regulator is mounted on the back of alternator. It is replaceable if you can find parts. Brushes are there also.
You can look for one of these online. Many sites, such as eBay, or even automotive parts stores will have this alternator for you.
Sometimes when parts are new, they have coatings and etc. that will smell when parts are warm. For example, alternator windings are coated with a electrical varnish. When the alternator is charging, it creates heat. This causes the paint to smell and odors such as a burning smell can be common for a couple of days.
The charging system on modern cars has 2 parts. The alternator and battery. On older cars there is also the voyage regulator. On modern cars it is built into the alternator. The electrical system however has many more parts.Alternator, voltage regulator, and alternator belt. The batteries themselves are part of the cranking system, not the charging system.
If it is makeing a noise or is not putting out at least 13.5 volts it is bad. Take the car or the alternator to an Auto Parts store and have them load test the alternator to be sure.
