Brazil is a country of modest altitudes. About 40% of its territory lies below 200 m altitude, 45% between 200 and 600 m, and 12% between 600 and 900 m. Only 3% are mountainous area, surpassing the 900 m altitude.

Traditionally, the focus in Brazil is divided according to the classification of Ab'Saber, respected geographer Paulo, a pioneer in identifying the broad areas morphoclimatic nationals. His classification identifies two major types of landscape units in Brazil: plateaus and plains.

More recently, with detailed surveys on the geological, geomorphological, soil, hydrology and vegetation of the country, it was possible a deeper understanding of the Brazilian relief and arrive at a more detailed classification, proposed in 1989 by Professor Ross Jurandyr, Department of Geography, University of São Paulo. In the classification of Ross, are considered three major landforms: plains, plains and depressions.
