The Pillars of Hercules are the stones that mark the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Plato was believed to have said that the Pillars of Hercules marked the entrance to the lost city of Atlantis.

In Greek mythology, Hercules came to a mountain and instead of climbing the mountain, he used his club to smash through it. This created two mountains that were named the Pillars of Hercules.
Strait of Gibraltar
The so-called Pillars of Hercules are the rock of Gibraltar and (probably) Monte Hacho in Ceuta, north Africa. Since both landmarks are on Spanish soil, the Spanish are one group of people involved. And since the British rule over Gibraltar, they are the other group.

The Pillars of Hercules refers to two rock promontories located where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet. The one on the North side is the Rock of Gibralter (in Gibralter), the one on the South is Jebel Musa (in Morocco).
