The positive effects are economic: the Gulf of Mexico is an important body of water with many resources, including rich fisheries, oil and gas deposits. It is also a point of entry into the southern United States and eastern Mexico, allowing for important commercial ports such as New Orleans, Galveston, Tampico and Veracruz. Wetlands along the Gulf of Mexico shores prevent erosion and add natural beauty, helping the tourism industry on both nations.

The negative effects are basically towards the marine ecosystems along the Gulf. Eutrophication is common, especially along deltas of important rivers such as the Mississippi, Rio Grande and Grijalva, resulting in extensive "dead zones" devoid of life; oil and chemical spills are also a consequence of several oil platforms found along the coast.
