The main complication is that the drug won't work properly in conjunction with alcohol. Also, the reason you find it difficult to stop drinking is quite possibly because the abilify helps with the depressive aspect of bipolar but is less useful at treating the manic side (so I understand, I'm not a pharmacist). This has meant in my case that I become anxious and nervous in the early evening, which has habitually resulted in using alcohol as a sedative. The problem is that although it sedates anxiety pretty well, long term use can lead to more severe depression. It's kind of a catch 22. The only real answer is to try and cut right down on your alcohol intake by finding a complementary drug that helps to decrease your anxiety before you want to drink. Worked for me, to a large extent anyway.

The short answer is that alcohol is a major DEPRESSANT, so if you are taking an antidepressant medication for bipolar, it wont have as good a result. If you are drinking to reduce anxiety, you should ask your doctor for a mild anti-anxiety medication; a low dose of Ativan or Xanax- this may help. You really need to stop drinking to avoid additonal DEPRESSION. Next time you refill your prescription, ask the pharmacist for a print out for your medication. This will give lots of valuable information.

If you want to stop drinking, go to Alcoholics Anonymous.

Is there a generic form of Aripiprazole?

The patent for Abilify currently expires in October 2014. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of Abilify could become available. However, there are other circumstances that could come up to extend the exclusivity period of Abilify beyond 2014. These circumstances could include things such as lawsuits or other patents for specific Abilify uses. Once Abilify goes off patent, there may be several companies that will begin manufacturing a generic Abilify drug.

Is Abilify prescribed for ADHD?

Not as a standard treatment. Typically Abilify (aripiprazole) is used for conditions such as bipolar mood disorder. There have been some studies looking at using it in ADHD, but they are just in the research phase. So, in a few years, this may be something else to try, but for now, most physicians stick to one of the standard classes of medications. In someone who has bipolar and ADHD both, this might be a possible treatment now. ! Dr. B.
