  1. First I need to gather the equipment. I will need a sphygmomanometer(blood pressure cuff), stethoscope, pen, and paper.
  2. Next I need to identify and greet the patient so that they feel a little more comfortable. I can do so by saying something like hi (patient's name) my name is Jessica.
  3. Then I will tell the patient what I am going to do. Again this just makes them feel comfortable. It also lets them know what you are going to do so they are not surprised when you start doing it.I can do so by saying I am going to take your blood pressure.
  4. Then I will ask patient to expose arm on a flat surface with arm facing upward. If the arm is facing upward it is easier to get to their brachial pulse which I will explain where that is located further down in my demonstration.
  5. Next I will expose the arm as much as possible by rolling up the sleeve. By rolling up the sleeve it makes it easier to hear the brachial pulse. I should not roll up the sleeves if the shirt is heavy or tight because it my disrupt the blood flow. If I am not able to roll the sleeves I would ask the patient to please take their arm out of the sleeve.
  6. Now I squeeze the cuff together in my hands. This removes access air so that it is easier to place the cuff on the arm.
  7. Then I turn the valve of the cuff clockwise to close it. I close it so that the air doesn't escape when I start to pump the cuff.
  8. Now I am ready to place the cuff around the upper part of the arm about 1 inch below the arm pit.
  9. Then I need to locate the brachial pulse with my middle finger and index finger. The brachial pulse is felt on the brachial artery. This artery is on the inside of your elbow.
  10. Now I am going to place the ear pieces of the stethoscope into my ears. This enables me to listen for the blood pressure.
  11. Next I will place the diaphragm(the larger side located at the end of the stethoscope.) of the stethoscope over the brachial pulse site.
  12. I will hold the rubber bulb that is connected to the sphygmomanometer in the palm of my hand, the one not holding the stethoscope.
  13. Then I will inflate the cuff by pumping the bulb between 170 to 200 mm hg. By inflating the cuff to high it can be painful to the patient. By inflating it to low you may not be high enough to hear their systolic reading.
  14. Next I loosen the valve by turning it slowly counter clockwise while listening closely for the first sound you hear. This sound is called the systolic reading. Then carefully listen for the last sound you hear. This sound is called the diastolic reading.
  15. Then I need to write down the systolic and diastolic readings on a piece of paper. I also write them down as soon as I know them so I do not forget.
  16. The I deflate the cuff by loosening the valve. To loosen I will turn the valve counter clockwise.
  17. Then I remove the cuff from the patients arm.
  18. Now I can take the ear pieces of the stethoscope out of my ears.
  19. Last I record the systolic and diastolic reading into the chart. These are the same readings I wrote down earlier on the piece of paper.
Now that you know properly how to take a blood pressure I hope you use this whenever necessary. You can use this to take a family members blood pressure. It comes in useful if you or someone you know thinks they have high blood pressure.

There is no specific order that you need to do, its whatever you find easiest. I do blood pressure and pulse oximeter first and then count respirations while that is doing its thing then temperature, my order only works if you use machines. Otherwise I do pulse, respirations, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse oximeter.

As easy as ABC. A=Airway: is it unobstructed. B=Breathing: rise and fall of chest, breath sounds. C=Circulation: is there a heart beat/pulse, is color good.
